More questions from me .....
It seems every day I'm getting spyware on my puter - ad-ware picks up 10-20 a day - whats that anti spyware thing to block them. I never had that many before ?
Sometimes I go in through AOL other times I just go in through IE is this why I'm getting them as I'm sure AOL as all sorts of blockers.
Thanks

Spyware Blaster

You must be visiting some dodgy sites Michelle
Or maybe its AOL itself
I think its called spyblocker or something like that, I dont find a need for it so dont use it but others on here do and someone will tell you soon no doubt :)
-
wow that was quick ......... thats it, spyware blaster ......... thanks TR
 sandra, shhhhhh about the sites I go on :P
-
could well be AOL though!

Hi Michelle
I also use AOL and I was surprised to find that its spyware software is a program that you download and use to scan your system, rather like Ad-Aware. It doesn't actually block anything, it just tries to clean up afterwards. I've found that using Ad-Aware is much more effective and picks up tracking software that AOL overlooks

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/) is the thing to have, because it stops spyware getting onto your machine in the first place. I still run Ad Aware and Spybot about once a month, of if I suspect something might have got through, but 95% of the time, they come up clean.

For those that are running the "old" version there is a new version available 8) and dont forget to enable when installed as it doesnt automatically do it.

Yes spyware blaster is what I had before, I had hardly any come up then.
I've got it now and its working fine.
I think its when I just go through IE that I get them, sometimes I don't bother opening the AOL programme.

Can't you use Firefox, Michelle? :|
-
I use Ad-Aware Professional which contains AdWatch. When enabled it's supposed to repel all spyware on detection. To be fair, most of the time it does but the real dodgy sites always get their spyware through no matter what. What are these dodgy sites I speak of? Pretty Sheep thumbnails? Nope... most financial sites! How scary is that?
-
Oh I can't cope with changing to firefox ...... I've still gotta get used to XP ...... I'm not good with change  :D
You can get them from anywhere can't you... I've only been on estate agent sites and games sites and I got loads.
The ad-aware I got is SE personal ...... I don't think it had adwatch thats the one you have to pay for isn't it.

The next version of Internet Explorer will be very similar to Firefox Michelle so you are most likely going to change sooner or later anyway. The only major difference is that your active screens are tabbed along the bottom so that you can access them more easily. And of course there are fewer security issues. You can actually have both IE and Firefox running at the same time so if you don't like Firefox you can go back to IE.
Ad-Watch has to be paid for but I'm not really sure if it's worth it if it lets stuff in.
-
if thats all you go on then maybe its a firewall issue? or some sort of p2p problem?
-
I'll see how its got on with the new spyware blaster before I go on anyother sites :-)
So firefox is like Mozilla then? -
I did like that one but it didn't like M.E :D
Do you all not use IE now ?
-
Yes, they are the same Michelle. I think that few of the regulars here use IE - not even myself. I use Avant which is a cross between Firefox and IE inasmuch that it's IE pretending to be Firefox.
-
Mozilla is the complete suite, with integrated mail client, and HTML editor, and Firefox is the stand alone browser version, Michelle. There are a few small differences between the two, but the basic engine is the same in both. I would recommend giving Firefox another go, and if you like it, and are also looking for an e-mail client, try Thunderbird, or go to the Mozilla Suite which has it all in one, the advantage of which being that it's only taking up one portion of resources, whereas running both Firefox and Thunderbird separately, obviously takes up two portions.
-
Thunderbird is excellent, might take a little getting used to if you use outlook but well worth it in the long run.
Instead of IE and Mozilla you could use opera, but then only crazy people use that :-) (expecting a comment on that one). Oh and whatever you do dont use avant! :-)
-
Opera is OK if you want a banner ad permanently in your browser window, or alternatively *cough* pay for it!! :horror: Avant, as far as I understand, is merely IE in a different coat. Oh, and the likes of Clive use it!
-
exactly so if that doenst make you run then i dont know what will :-)
