I've volunteered to set up a BB connection for a friend of mine but his phone point is at the opposite side of the room to his computer. Moving the computer is not really an option since he has a built in desk for his computer equipment. I know that the only sensible option is to get BT to move the phone point, but can you buy longer BB line cables?

I'm quite sure that the cable can be as long as you need it - without loss of strength to the signal. Maybe something like the following is an option;

My BT phone point is in the living room, but the computer is in the bedroom and all I use is an ordinary telephone line extension lead (99p from "Wisebuys") with a filter at either end. Having recently moved the computer to the living room for a couple of days while I painted the bedroom, I can honestly say that having the modem plugged directly into the phone socket showed no improvement or deterioration in strength of signal.

Oh that's great news - thanks guys! Either of those options will be cheaper than getting sockets moved.

Too right! Apparently BT charge something like £100 to move a socket, or install a new one! :ooo:

He bought the Maplins 10m broadband reel and the set-up was effortless. He didn't even have dial up before so he's well pleased!

I presume you put Pals in his bookmarks, Clive?
:D

I think I had better give him a more gentle introduction to the Internet first Dave. :laugh:

I think he'd have been more impressed if he did have dial-up before :lol:

:twisted:

He's gone straight on to a 2.2Mb connection! My first connection was at 9 Kb/s. :laugh:
