Hi Jim,
You might want to wait for Sandra to see this before taking any of my advice, but having done a bit of Googling, it seems there may be a bug in Windows XP SP2, which could cause your symptoms, although I have to say, the error message given is not identical to yours. Lots of info in the link below, however, including downloadable Microsoft patches:-

Have you tried going into your network connections folder when you get this message and right clicking on your LAN icon and selecting repair ?
When I have seen that its usually because the LAN IP address has fouled up and its assigned one for a pc to pc instead of a pc to router one, usually in the 169.xx.xx.xx range.
Have you tried rebooting the router as well as the pc so that the router can reassign the LAN IPs ?

Hi Sandra, I have tried to repair the way you suggested ,no go there ,next time it happens will reboot router as well .
thanks for your help .....Jim

Did it give you a message similar to " Unable to renew IP address" when you tried to repair the connection ?
-
Yes it did , I followed Simon's suggestion so maybe that will work .....Jim

The unable to renew IP is usually sorted by rebooting both the router and the pc at the same time.
Anyway the main thing is that its sorted by whichever method you used :)

Came home tonight to find the message again ,anymore suggestions ?......Jim
