Lots of people recommend Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp?lang=en&ctry=GB&dc=56pus) and AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1) or Avast (http://www.avast.com/), both of which are free, and there is also now an AVG+Firewall (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/AvgPlusFw/lng/uk/tpl/tpl01) edition.  I used to recommend Sygate as a firewall, but it has now been swallowed up by Symantec (Norton), so I would probably suggest Agnitum Outpost (http://www.agnitum.co.uk/index.php?ref=37C133AF) as something to try.

If you want a paid for AV / Firewall suite, you could look at McAfee (http://www.mcafeestore.com/dr/sat4/ec_MAIN.Entry?CID=0&SID=39695&SP=10007&DSP=0&CUR=826&PGRP=0&ABCODE=&CACHE_ID=0), but I have never used it, and to be honest, we rarely hear of anybody who does, however, that could be a good sign.  ;)

On my windows machine I use Zone Alarm / AVG. However firewall wise you can't beat a nice hardware one on a router.

Zone Alarm version 2 (circa 1999) does what I expect a firewall to do and nothing more, plus AVG.  I used to use Sygate firewall until it reached version 5.5, or something like that, and started to be problematic so I dumped it.

I avoid all-in-ones.  To me they are the washer/dryer of security software.  One part goes wrong and the whole thing breaks down leaving us unprotected on two fronts.

very good point. I'd also heavily recommend that you don't do that. All you need is one piece of software to be targetted and you may end up with no updates / fixes.
