Title: Copying protected files

Hey folks i couldnt log on to my old account (twiggy) so had to make a new one glad to see the froum grown so much of late.

Any way we had a poswer cut recently around here unfourtnatly my computer was on at the time. when tired to start it kept gettin the blue screen of death just before the log in screen.

Trying to back-up my files onto my 2nd computer all is well but i can't access the files in the desktop folder. Obviously this is due to having the user account passworded. How can i access them files and copy them across?

They are quite important so do really need them. (rember i cant boot of that hardrive to change passwords etc)

Are you dual booting or something, if you can recover some files but not the desktop ones ?

How big are the files youre trying to recover in total approximately and which OS are you using ?

basically i have the hardrive that isnt booting windows in a computer that is working. Im copying all my files across before i whipe it and re-install. How ever i cant access all the files/folders i have on my desktop on that harddrive. When i try to access the desktop folder it says that i do no have access to it. This is because i have a password on that user account so obvious you are un-able to access the files stored unser that username, well as far as im aware of thats why i need your help.

The total size of the files im trying to copy across is about 30gb (work, photos, vdieos, music etc). Both harddrives have windows xp obviously i cant boot the one that crashed in the power cut.

Hope this clears things up if not will try and give more info.

Ok that explains it, had me puzzled for a bit.

I wouldnt have though that the password would have been working if the hard drive was being accessed from another OS  :(

Is the desktop folder for that account not visible in safe mode either ?

no the desktop folder is visable just when you double click or click explore a message appers saying this folder is not accessable make sure its not protected or something along this lines.

I can't think how else i could access it, the only thing i can think of is to start it up and put the password in but of course i can't do that due to the blue screen of death at the log-in screen.

You can possibly use this program to copy the folder and that may remove the copy protection, or at least save it to your new drive where you could try and crack the password later so that your data would be saved.
