What's slightly scary is that none of the articles contain information on how to remove these trojans.

I have at least 4, including F-Secure, which has a built in real time spyware scanner.  Unfortunately, it made me uninstall Spybot, but now I have XoftSpy instead, as well as Ad Aware and Spyware Blaster!

Found a few on it's maiden voyage, Clive, but none since.  I assume this is because there's nothing there to find.   :D

In addition to Ad-Aware SE, Spybot S&D, Spywareblaster, Nortons and Ewido I tried Spyware Doctor which scans for malware but you have to purchase it if you want anything removed.  My machine was clean but Mrs Clive's contains around 40 which all the others miss.    I'm half tempted to shell out the $50.

Be aware that it could be a marketing ploy to get you to purchase it, Clive.  I firmly believe that some programs 'plant' their own 'spyware' on your PC, in order to scare you into buying the product to remove it.   Spyware Doctor is a very well regarded application, but it seems coincidental that it found all these items, at least 4 other programs missed.

Oh, I just re-read your post - have you run all the other utilities on Mrs Clive's machine also?

Yes, but they all claim it to be clean.  I know that it's not because the HDD is often chattering away when the machine is idle.

That could be something genuine updating itself, but you can't be too careful.

I think it's Webshots.  It's a screensaver that generates some very pretty pictures but I think it contains spyware.

Yes, and I believe it also updates itself all the time too.  You could always try blocking it with the firewall.

or just plain and simply removing it and trying to find a similar but free from crap tool??

I think Webshots is pretty unique, and I don't actually think it is dangerous as such.  It's just that the constant updating tends to slow down the machine.
