Title: Start up problem

Has anyone any ideas on how to solve the following problem...

Each time my daughter starts up her pc it automatically kicks in with a check disk sequence saying it is checking the D drive and goes on the do 3 subsequent checks to 100% prior to Windows XP starting up.  It says this check could be skipped but is not advisable.  How can I stop this happening?

This can happen if PC hasn't been shut down correctly.

It's also possible that you have installed some sort of software that checks your disk prior to window's loading.

Look and see if you have any anti virus or other monitoring programme running at startup and prevent it from loading

Thanks for the reply Lona no there is nothing running at startup to prevent it from loading,  any other ideas?

Download Hijack This (http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php then post your log file here.  That will enable us to see what's running on your system and advise you whether something shouldn't be.

i bet the bootup procedure of windows has got corrupted. I doubt it is a bootup process, so hijack this might not be anyuse, it is probably something before there in the bootup sequence - as the main kernal has not loaded yet.

Lona is right, has the machine been switched off incorrectly? This is what usually causes this error.

It could be that the machine is not switching off correctly, windows has a history of doing this. Is it a laptop or desktop? It occurs more often on laptops.

Are all the latest windows updates installed? It could also be due to one of these not installing properly, or in the process and the machine being incorrectly swtiched off.

You could try a system restore, Serenity.  It might take it back to when it wasn't doing the scan.

Try starting in safe mode and running SCANDISK from the start/run part.
