Title: LCP Down
Post by: DJ on September 21, 2007, 17:41
Hi All,

Friend haveing problems with their internet connection after a power cut.

They used to use a Netgear DG834m wirless router but it now states LCP Down, CHAPS failed authentication.

Now if they use the original ZyXEL ADSL modem they got with their internet all works - however they don't have wireless with this.

A few things;

At no point have I had to enter a username and password for the ZyXEL modem and the Netgear is showing username as Guest and password as password.
I think their ISP is EasyNet however it is provided by their company (as a business line) so not really sure.
I have already updated the router to the latest firmware version.

Any suggestions to make the Netgear work again!?

Thanks, DJ

There's a little reset button on the back of the router, DJ.  This will reset all settings to default.  Might be worth a try.  Second thing would be to check if a user name and password is required to log on.  I've read somewhere else about there being an issue with these routers, following power outages, but I can't remember the exact details of what happens, or the remedy.  I'll try to find out more if none of the above works.

Thanks Simon,

Yep tried the hardware reset pin in back thing  :P

Still confused if they need a username and password or not. Have tried using the option of 'No User Name Required' and entering Username as Guest, which it puts in itself, but still no joy!

Thanks, DJ.

Sam very recently published a list of default usernames and passwords at

I can't see Netgear DG834m but Netgear DG834g is there sporting a disarmingly simple username and password!   ;D

Thanks Clive,

I can access the router fine. Its the username and password for the internet connection that I'm not sure if I need.

I can get connected using the other modem, but the netgear one produces this error message.

If you look at properties for the modem then that should show the correct username, the password will be asterisked out.
Download a little free program from passware called Asterisk Key and that will show you whats hidden beneath the astersks  :)
