Title: Broadband speed
Post by: Whiskas on March 09, 2003, 23:30
I have just read that you can increase the speed of your BB by doing something to the MTU and tcprwin ??? What are they talking about?

You really do want your cake and to be able to eat it Whiskas dont you   ::)
Unless you are getting slower than expected speeds I would leave it as it is,there are various ways that I have seen on some sites that suggest tweaking your modem to improve it but to be honest it makes as much sense as overclocking a 2.8ghz cpu to make it 2.9ghz,the noticeable difference would be imperceivable in use and you would risk making it more unreliable or stopping it working altogether  :o

Other people may say differently Whiskas, but I found the tweaks you mentioned didn't make any noticable difference.  You can test your speed at http://www.dslreports.com/tools, but these tests are not all that reliable, and you may find that you could do several tests, all with different results!

Why don't you run the test then post the results on here?  If anything needs doing, we can take it from there, but if you're happy with your speed, and you find it much faster than 56K, then you should be OK.

The main thing too Whiskas is that your download speed is more dependant on the site/PC that your are downloading from.
No matter how fast your modem is capable of downloading data at if its coming off a site that will only allow you to get it at around 60k per sec then that is all you will get.I have had some P2P stuff coming in at as slow as 1K and as fast as 180K  ::)

I had just wondered because I'd been flicking about the net and seen that people were altering stuff to make it faster.

I tested the speed and this is what I got

2003-03-09 18:58:35 EST: 468 / 235
Your download speed : 468284 bps, or 468 kbps.
A 57.1 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 235017 bps, or 235 kbps

and this too
How did your speed compare? (popup table key)
kbps
ugh   «33.6k modem download speed

ugh   «typical 56k modem download speed

That's about the same as mine, and probably Sandra's, usually is, Whiskas.  I wouldn't think you need to start fiddling with anything.   ;) :)

Whiskas I think you might be talking about the MTU tweak. Aparrently the BT network needs this MTU value to be set at 1458 rather than the default of 1500.

Details can be found here (http://www.adslguide.org.uk/newsarchive.asp?item=929)

My Exchange target is 350, registrations to date are 135, so on the basis of 6 additional registrations since my last visit 4 days ago, we should hit the target at 8.00am on Monday 4th August 2003  YIPPIE  ;D

OK so I?m bored

And what about powerline broadband?!

That is being trialed the now and should hopefully be out soon. From the info available speeds offered are 2Mb/sec up and down for £25  :o :o :o

Ill find the site and post it here :)
