Sure am..and am very impressed so far, it seems to have everything AV as well as anti spyware and it also tells you when you are googling if the pages are safe from viruses

Yes i tried it a few weeks back.

I tried to like it and wanted to like it but found it slowed my system down more than anything i've tried in the past so i got rid.

Doesn't mean it will have the same effect for everyone as i've found with others in the past  :dunno:

Do u use the previous one Cammy ? And if so do you find that one better?

I just tried to install 8 but it said I have ewido and I'd have to delete that before it will install?  Why can't i just have both?  >:(

Yes i had it previously shell and that was 100% fine.

Think i'm just relying on Vistas own things and my router firewall and using CCleaner every now and then.

BTW i think CCleaner (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/) is the best thing for clearing out the junk ever

probably because the way they work they will both think they are viruses!

Have used AVG free for many years, never had any infection.  Installed avg 8 free and it runs more efficiently then previous versions. It has a very clean interface and I have not noticed any impact on perormance of my machine.  I have now got to install it on my wifes and friends machines, I always try these things out first.

Michelle, Ewido became AVG Anti Spyware, and if AVG 8 incorporates anti spyware, it probably won't let you have both, as they are more or less one and the same.

I'm still at a loss as to why, if it's such a good product, they would want to give it away.  :dunno:

Michelle, if you want a back up anti spyware, Windows Defender seems to run along side most other security programs quite happily.

Interesting concept, Rik, but I don't think a well behaved Alf exists, does it?  ;D

It seems fine to me but as I am running Vista I had to get an addon from windows updates before I could install it.
This meant I had to get the dreaded WGA to say that I had a legit version of Vista before it let me download it.
As mines legit, or at least windoze thinks it is :o: there wasnt a problem but others with dodgier versions of Vista may not be able to install it, the full scan took over an hour even when set at its fastest speed.
I am not sure if this is because of the extra spyware and trojan scans its doing over AVG free 7.5 but the full pc scan used to take about 25 minutes    :dunno:

Thats what i noticed changing from AVG to Nod32, AVG is so slow, also all the viruses it missed.
AVG is only popular because its free, it really is a poor product.

is that because vista is hogging the processor?

No Sam, its the same PC and OS that I noticed the difference in the time that it took to run the scan on.
Its an Intel P4 660 3.6ghz  CPU so it acts like a dual core anyway but the PC wasnt doing anything else at the time of the scan.

Sorry to break in here, but I have tried a couple of times to download AVG 8 and the last time it came up with that "can't save this file as it can't read the exe file" or something to that effect. I'm re-trying again, and I'm downloading from File Hippo as I couldn't find it, well the free version, at the AVG site.

The jury  is still out for me  :P Some people describe it as Norton in disguise ie a resource hog. My avg 7.5 "seems" ok but sooner or later i'm sure the kids will download it by accident so i'll leave it in the lap of the gods  ;D

So long as 7.5 keeps updating the definitions I'll stick with it.  I have other programs to check for spyware, I don't want or need another.

I have read on other forums that AVG 8 is picking up a lot off warnings, if you have AVG8 installed..have a look in the scan area  :o

After trying numerous times to download the damned thing and finally succeeding, it lasted one day. I deleted it and went back to AVG 7.5, my system is slow enough with out this.  :(

I guess the new version requires more resources to run, as it now seems to incorporate anti-spyware.

I got the same message, Michelle.  I have windows defender and I don't want to disable it.

It seems like the anti spyware in avg 8 conflicts with amongst others spyware blaster so i think i'll stick with v 7.5 for the time being  :arsed:
Title: Re: AVG 8.0
Post by: Clive on April 29, 2008, 22:56
There is a newer version of Spywareblaster (4.0) which appears to work fine with AVG 8.

Ref AVG 8.0 free is there anyway that you can turn off the anti spyware function?
Title: Re: AVG 8.0
Post by: Simon on June 06, 2008, 20:41
Someone who actually uses it will hopefully confirm / deny this, JK, but having picked up some bits from Googling, it seems you cannot disable the anti-spyware component of the free version, but you can disable the 'link scanner', which I'm guessing is web traffic scanning.

Well, after almost a decade of AVG, I have dumped it and have installed Avira Antivir Personal Edition.  As I posted previously, I have other programs to keep me free from spyware - I don't want another one.

Why can't things that work brilliantly be left alone?
Title: Re: AVG 8.0
Post by: Simon on June 06, 2008, 23:02
Could you not have simply stuck to the old version, Dave?  :dunno:
Title: Re: AVG 8.0
Post by: Clive on June 06, 2008, 23:32
The old version is no longer supported Simon so the choice is to update or replace.  ::)
Another program they ruined was Ad-Aware.  After using it for many years I had to get rid of the 2007 version because it was  a load of rubbish.  I think the 2008 version is coming  soon so let's hope they have learned their lesson.

Feedback on AVG 8.
I had AVG 7.5 antivirus and the 7.5 anti-spyware . Did not like the AVG 8 so have changed to Avira AntiVir personal.
The Avira appears to me to be much better than AVG. I am still using AVG 7.5 anti-spyware.

I think you can still use AVG 7.5, but you have to do Virus Data downloads manually.

I have also noticed AVG 8 slows down my web experience
