Techcrunch (http://www.techcrunch.com/get-youtube-movie/) also included on that web page is a link to a free open source compatible audio/video player.Videolan (http://www.videolan.org/)
Just realised there is already a thread covering You Tube downloads

Have had trouble with Techcrunch ,kept saying invalid Url. So I have downloaded the DownloadHelper (http://www.downloadhelper.net/index.php)for the Firefox browser. And it works a treat. I can then watch the video via the Videolan media player.

I like aTube Catcher (http://atube-catcher.dsnetwb.com/get-video-software-windows-home/?ForEx) for this purpose. Not only will it grab the videos, it'll recode them into a variety of different formats.
-
cool, shame it looks like a windows only app.. I will have to see if I can get it working in WINE.
-
I use downloadhelper addon in firefox. Since its just a FF addon it should work in linux.
