Title: What can be copied to an external hard drive ?
Post by: David on October 06, 2008, 14:35
A simple enough question I hope.

I have copied documents photos and music to my external hard drive.is there any way I can copy things other than this ?bookmarks or favourites ?

I guess its either yes or no really.

Are these counted as part of the operating system?
Finally if I need to copy every Email would I be right in thinking make a folder and copy this ?

Remember Im new to this and very highly strung  (dont say it Simon) !!!! or Rik for that matter  ;D ;D

You can copy anything that's considered data, David, so that would include email, MP3 files, videos and photos.

To move the active email folder to the drive, you would have to ensure that your email client pointed at it, for most other apps it's merely a case of opening the file on the drive.

It would be worth noting that USB drives are significantly slower than internal drives, so I wouldn't recommend them for large quantities of live data.

Your email client has to know where the mail is stored, David, and if you move the storage location, then you will have to tell the email client where to look for it, and where to put new mail.

Two things: what's your email client (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc), and what's the purpose of moving the data?  Is it just to back up and move to another machine, or are you intending to use the external drive permamently?

OK, if you Google 'back up outlook express', you should find a link to one of the Microsoft support pages with the instructions, David.  Sorry, can't do it for you from my phone.
