Title: cannot forward attachments in Outlook Express
Post by: Clive on December 20, 2008, 15:30
In recent days I have been unable to forward attachments in Outlook Express.  The problem only affects attachments containing risque material such as pictures of naked sheep whereas completely clean pictures sail through without hinderance.  Why has OE become so puritanical in its old age?   :dunno:  This is the error message I receive:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject 'Fw: Fw: A bit of care! NEW PIRELLI 2009 CALENDAR', Account: 'mail.btinternet.com', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '451 See http://pobox.com/~djb/docs/smtplf.html.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 451, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

That one is 1.49 Mb.  But I can forward much larger ones than that.

If it's only just started happening, and you've not changed any settings, my guess would be a server issue, Clive, with an emphasis on 'guess'.  :)

Given the sync speed you're reporting in the other thread, Clive, it's possible the connection dropped out briefly while sending. The other question, which you appear to have answered, is that BT don't have a size limit on attachments.

Yes, good point Rik.  If only I knew whose server I'm with.   :dunno:

It may be that they are being blocked by BT or be the recipient server, Clive. Will it send at all, ie have you tried more than one address? Have you tried zipping the file?

Take out the email addresses in the email attachment, but leave the email addresses in the send too ..  ;) hope that explains what I mean.

If there are email addresses in the attachment it wont send?

You can test them on me if you like.  I'm not easily shocked!  ;D

Yes, zipping hides all manner of sins, so that could well be worth a try.  :)

The emails won't send to any recipient, not even myself.  I always strip out any  addresses from the incoming email Terry.  I'm beginning suspect there may be a corruption in my Outlook Express and think it may be worth attempting a system restore to see if that might solve it.  I had success with that method earlier today when the toolbar disappeared from the top of OE.  Restoring to 24 hours ago brought it back even though googling for a solution said I would have to edit the registry in order to retrieve it.

Do you have email scanning on with your anti-virus, Clive?  Perhaps try it with it off?  Maybe it's being a bit over zealous?

Failed!  I suppose you are only allowed one successful system restore in a life time and I used mine up this morning.

Anti-virus?

Post by: Clive on December 21, 2008, 23:50
Thanks for that suggestion Simon.  I use AVG 8.0 but outgoing mail isn't scanned.  I've had a look at the settings and I can't see anything that might cause it.

What about Outlook?  Have you tried with that?

I hate Outlook Simon.  Next time I receive an attachment I'll try forwarding it direct from the server instead of downloading it.  I can also try downloading it to Mrs Clive's computer to see if that makes any difference.

That is the slippery slope to FF if I'm not mistaken.  Nice try Simon but I still have my wits about me - I think!

TBird is standalone, Clive - you might just like it. :)

Yes, it's not attached to FF, but admittedly, in the family.  I only meant it might be worth a try to eliminate OE as the culprit, Clive.  I know how set in your ways you are, so there's no hope of converting you.  ;)

Interestingly, I have been able to forward a new receipt but still cannot forward those older ones.  I'm sending to exactly the same addresses so the mystery deepens!

It might have baulked at the number of recipients - did you resend individually, or the same multiple batch?

My jokes "group" consists of just 4 or 5 recipients Rik, and I've not had a problem until the last 2 weeks or so.  I'll try saving the attachments and send them that way.  Has to be worth a try!   :D

Bloody hell!  That works a treat!  It doesn't do anything to help explain why I can't forward the originals like the good old days!   Let me think.  What have I done to my computer these past 2 weeks?  Oh yes!  I updated all those patches from October - and installed SP3 as well!  Coincidence?  Hmmmmmm.  But that's why I tried a month old system restore.  Maybe you can't uninstall a patch?  I seem to remember that I was unable to uninstall a Wiindows Me patch back in early 2002.  I can't remember how that patch screwed up my computer but after contacting MS they did eventually come up with a solution at around the 3rd attempt.  Some nice young lady from the US helped me out.   8-)

It could be a security update, or something peculiar to the message, Clive. Without seeing it, it's difficult to say, but if you want me to take a look, I'll PM you an address.

I can only send you the attachment as it's now saved on my computer because I'm still unable to forward the original e-mail Rik.  PM me and I will send it to you.
