The pursuit of science is just about knowledge. It doesn't have to be useful, just interesting.
In the case of the moon there is - still lots of unknowns about origins and the geology - also we are now at a point of looking for natural resources, abliet to exploit, and where to create a lunar base to further mankind's expansionist policies.

talking about the moon: Scientific American recommends 3 books about the moon - http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=reviews-july09 might have to get a couple out..
