Is it actually worthwhile collecting data from the moon?

The pursuit of science is just about knowledge. It doesn't have to be useful, just interesting.

In the case of the moon there is - still lots of unknowns about origins and the geology - also we are now at a point of looking for natural resources, abliet to exploit, and where to create a lunar base to further mankind's expansionist policies.
