Title: What has happened to my F-Secure?
Post by: Clive on November 16, 2009, 22:28
I've been happily using F-Secure for some time but around a week ago it asked me to download an important update which would enhance security and require a restart.  For a week I refused to do so telling it to remind me later.  Today when I turned on my computer a "Windows Download" automatic updates began even though I had this feature turned off.  Upon checking it seems to have switched itself on all by itself!  There was an automatic reboot afterwards after which I began getting an irritating F-Secure message  of  "System Modification attempt to the Registry" warning every time I opened a new webpage.  I could "trust it" or "disallow it".  I then noticed that F-Secure is set to Custom security instead of Normal but ot will not let me change back to normal.  I can scan for malware but I cannot update my virus database - it just won't let me.  My license has another3 months to run so I'm hardly out of compliance.   :dunno:  It's all very strange!

But after a reboot it's working OK again.   ;D

It is, Clive.  I'm wondering if this "Windows Download" was genuine, or something rogue, that F-Secure might have stopped, if you'd updated it when it asked?  Did you "trust" or "disallow" the registry modification?  Have you thought of trying a system restore?

It's still working fine this morning.  Yes, I was concerned tat the download may have been rogue which is why I didn't want to install it.

What's stopping you changing the setting, Clive?

Yeah, that.  I'm still wondering if something nasty has slipped through, as you delayed the F-Secure update for a week.  Have you done a full system scan?

:sokay:  I've sorted out the automatic updates.  I thought it could be done via the drop down menu in the Security Centre but I had to click on the link lower down. I have now set it to advise me when updates are available but not to download or install them.    :D

The offending message appeared again this morning but this time I allowed it to do its worst and download the update.  Seems to have worked ok for me with no problems.  Much better interface now.
