They were so much more interesting than a digital frequency display, weren't they.

Oh gosh yes!  I loved the old valve radios with the dials showing all the European radio stations.  And all those wavebands too.  The shortwave would keep me occupied for hours and it was even possible to listen to American local radio with their crazy DJ's.  Sometimes I would write to them for - I think it was called a Q card - to prove I had managed to listen in.   :sadgit:

I used to try to listen in to the police radios, but it was always very boring.

I found the police bands quite fascinating, some of the controllers were a hoot.
