Title: New satellite image of volcanic ash cloud
Post by: sam on April 16, 2010, 00:28
Quote
This image, acquired on 15 April 2010 by Envisat's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS), shows the vast cloud of volcanic ash sweeping across the UK from the eruption in Iceland, more than 1000 km away. The ash, which can be seen as the large grey streak in the image, is drifting from west to east at a height of about 11 km above the surface Earth.

They've closed all UK airspace till at least 1pm tomorrow.  Not heard of that before.  Chaos will ensue!

it already has from what I can tell. I thinks its a sensible move. I guess they have not needed todo it before but they are darn worried about engine failure. It sounds like Scottish airports will be open in the morning though.

I've not actually seen the news tonight, but I expect it will be a national disaster.

NTS are keeping air space closed until Saturday, according to reports this morning. This disruption is going to cost the airlines millions, and will begin to be seen in shops, where foods that are flown in simply won't be available.

Don't worry about the volcanic ash that won't be landing on your garden then will be landing on your garden.  It's perfectly safe.  That's what they told the dinosaurs too.   ;D

the meat. Don't they store transport it in vats of CO?

I would have thought CO2 for cooling?

What's the stuff in the packets from DR?

well I wasn't going for the cooling effect more just the preservation - i.e. some kind of cheap to manufacture gas that can surround the meat in contained environment such that bacteria can't grow etc.

Wouldn't CO permeate and be toxic?

possibly, so maybe it is CO2, my googling isn't good today either...

Dry ice which is CO2.

isnt that just to keep it cool though?

To keep it frozen, yes.

Unlike fruit and veg Sam, meat improves by hanging for a few weeks to let it mature. By the time its arrived from NZ its probably just about perfect. I dont eat much lamb though, I much prefer beef and venison :)
