Title: DNS Servers

  Some months ago I bought a Netgear Router from a guy on E Bay. This works ok with no problems so far, however, when I was looking through the settings I discovered that the DNS server was Plusnet. My ISP is Talk Talk, formely Tiscali.

 Been running this like this for months. The Plusnet DNS is ticked with password all filled in. Speed on my broadband is fine. Does this make any difference? Should I change the setting?

Just discovered this relates to Dynamic DNS Server-should I untick this-whats it about?

It sounds strange. MIs the password and username that of your provider? I guess the plusnet option might not do anything if the corrected username/ps is put in.

I'd be tempted to make a backup copy of the router config file, there is an option on most routers and then wipe it and start again - but ensure you have the correct info to hand.

The Dynamic DNS server, that should be for your home network, depending on which screen you are referring too.

That would be nice, but I dont think so. DNS servers are the servers that convert the http address into a number to connect to the PC holding the page requested. The Dynamic DNS is something else that I dont know about.

Thanks Rik-pretty heavy reading. Had a quick read of this, and it would appear to me that this is for PCs with a static IP address, in order to connect to your PC from a source away from home. Ive only got one desktop Pc, and no laptop and I guess this is of no use to me. Ive unticked the box, and my router is set to select DNS automatically, as My ISP set.

Think Ive got the idea.

Everything to do with comms, from my first 300 baud modem, has involved making settings and then hoping - you can't see what happens and can't test 'internally' any way, so you may be trying, at times, to fix a problem which is, in fact, external to you.
