Title: Lenovo to buy Medion
Post by: Rik on June 02, 2011, 10:07
The BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-13624378) reports that:

Quote
Chinese PC maker Lenovo has agreed to buy German electronics retailer Medion in a bid to boost its market share in Europe.

Lenovo will pay $331m (£203m) for a 37% stake in the company.

Lenovo, the world's fourth-largest computer maker said it plans to acquire as much as an 80% stake in the company.

It also said it hoped that the deal would help it double its share of Germany's PC market to 14%.

I wonder if that's good or bad news for consumers?

Well, their Tech Support couldn't get any worse.

Not to mention Tesco. They do have a loyal following though.

I have a nice Medion desktop that I'm looking forward to resetting up once I have some permanent accommodation somewhere...

They're actually quite decent machines, particularly for the price I paid.  I've had two of them all told, both of which were bought from Tesco on separate occasions and, coincidentally, at the very instant I heard they were being marked down as Manager's Clearance deals.  After recently splurging on a new lappy, I sold the older of the pair (see Gumtree pic, below), but the one I'm using now is rather like Trig's broom, in as much as it's had three heads and half-a-dozen handles since I bought it in 2009.  The only remaining original components are now the Q8300 CPU, 4GB RAM and the slightly cacky MS-7366 MoBo (which will be going fairly soon, as I've already bought its successor).  The machine only set me back around £230 when new, by the way.

This is first one, a Q6600/3GB/320GB,
which I sold for £275 a few weeks ago:-

Since Medions aren't terribly well ventilated and tend to run quite hot, the 'guts' of the current machine were subsequently shovelled into a Hiper Anubis case with more fans than Take That, along with the following stuff:  Hiper 880w PSU; Creative X-Fi Elite Pro Sound card; Gigabyte GTS250 1GB graphics; 2 x WD Scorpio Black 1TB HDs; LG GH22LS50 and GH22NS40 optical drives; Sony Floppy Drive (yes, I do!); Card Reader with various extra ports.  Oh yes, and it no longer runs the disgustingly vile Vista OS, but Win7 x32.

So, is it really still a Medion box?  Well, according to Trigger it is.  Why not ask him.  He works for Medion Tech Support.

It's just a bog-standard Windows 7 wallpaper, Simon.  Thus, something you're likely to remain unfamiliar with for at least the rest of this decade.  (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv300%2FMothballs%2FSmileys%2Fhehe.gif&hash=379b5b61e6f4dd6413c4798f6826a20b581ba48f)

The original file-name (img13.jpg) isn't terribly revealing, so here it is at 30% for a somewhat closer look.  All I can tell you is it ain't Bournemouth.   :dunno:
