A Firefox User has an interesting encounter with someone who has never used a computer before and we all learn something.

Its a common practice with software designers
They assume the user knows how to operate a computer
I myself never touched one until I was 50 and my kids had to show me

I can't recall not having a computer

I can recall not having a pocket calculator!

Great article! Like discovering a lost Amazonian tribe, it is becoming increasingly unusual to find someone who's never used a computer before. Although sadly there are some for whom the learning curve will always remain a flat line.
It wasn't until 1984 that got my first (work) computer. As I recall, the [Winchester] drives were the size of dustbin lids and had rather less storage capacity than one of Cyril Smith's trouser pockets. I then had to wait around for someone to invent the web, before I could tell anyone else that I had one. Once I'd got some interwebs, it was then just a simple matter of waiting another few years for some damn fool to invent PC-Pals. The rest, as they say, is hysteria.

The first go at a computer for me was when my Boss went out I thought I would have a go. Got stuck on some blasted Porn Site that wouldnt go away!! Had to get his Daughter to clear it for me. She found it most amusing, although she didnt say anything; at least I dont think so!!! :not:

Yes slide rules were the cutting edge in the early 70's. Do you remember the calculator kits from Sinclair that came out in the mid 70's and cost a relative fortune. ?

Vaguely, Dave. The first calculator I remember was a Philips, but I always wanted a Casio. ;D

I loved slide rules but I doubt if I could use one after so many years of using calculators. Yes, I remember the Sinclair calculator kits although I never bought one. I do however remember his crystal radio sets - and I did buy one of those! ;D
