as my exchange is getting broadband enabled, I have been comparing initial set up costs, and monthly subscription costs. I have indicated the difference compared to the cheapest 'set up' provider [including their hardware package] compared to the rest.
Also I have compared yearly running cost differences [assuming you pay monthly] on the same basis, I hope it is clear to those interested. I have looked at nine ISP's whom I may have considered for the service, though there are plenty others to chose from.

I must admit that dial-up backup is very thoughtful of some providers. You don't get that from BTOpenworld.

Yes that's the only down side to the Pipex package Clive. I mean £17.57 setup fee [hardware included]is a cracking deal. But to have a backup dial connection, it's an extra £7.05 per month inclusive of Vat + 1p a minute. Why don't they offer a simple 0845 back up at 1p a minute, at no extra charge, like Plusnet and others do.
Of course looking long term, Plusnet although dearer to set up by a hefty £76.17 breaks even at month 53, and then becomes £17.40 a year cheaper. ::)Plus you get a massive 250MB of webspace, not that I need it.
And if I go for the PlusNet £18.99 package, break even happens end of month 17, then it will be £54.40 per year cheaper than the Pipex deal.
Decisions, decisions :-\

Maybe if youre not on BT, (in one of its guises), Clive you dont really need a backup ;)

I'm ashamed to say that I am on BT Sandra. ;D

Come on Sandra, no system is infallable, having a back up is considered 'good practice' in any application or system mangement. ::)
Don't start looking for feeble excuse's because Pipex don't provide one >:( ;)

Latest,
PlusNet do a £24.99 package all in, no hardware or setup charges. Payable monthly, on a 12 month contract, and after the twelve months the harware becomes your property.
Now this pans out at total for year £299.88 against Pipex's £298.68...£1.20 differance. But PlusNet offer a better value added package http://www.plus.net/info2/residential/res_broadband_easystart_selfinstall.html (http://www.plus.net/info2/residential/res_broadband_easystart_selfinstall.html)
So I rang em, and asked if after 12 months I could opt for the £21.99 package [which is exactly the same as the £24.99 service wise] Yes I could, but it would mean paying another activation charge of £58.75......now that's just plain mean of them I think. I may just tell em where to stick it....but I'm not one to 'cut my nose off to spite my face'......so I might not ::)
FOOTY TIME ;D
