I had to do a system restore last night and when I rebooted Norton Utilities had gone but the recycle bin was still there. I couldn't use the uninstall facility so I uninstalled from add/remove but it didn't remove the recycle bin. I tried to re-install norton utilities again but it wouldn't let me install as it says a previous version is on my pc. I found the folder and manually deleted all the files but I still can't get rid of the recycle bin and cannot do a re-install. I have tried to do a further system restore but it won't let you go forward in time :(

Ummm.... :-\
Have you done a search for all 'Norton' files, Lona? I have to say I've never had a problem uninstalling or reinstalling any Norton utilities, even if another version exists on the machine.
Hopefully someone more helpful will come along soon! ;) ;D

Areyou sure it's not just that the desktop icon has vanished Lona? Try looking in "all programs" to see if you can still find it on your C drive.
-
I can find it on my C drive but cannot open it as some of the files are missing. It won't install on top of itself as it keeps saying I need to uninstall it first but the uninstall file is missing. It's a catch 22 situation. It won't uninstall from the add/remove in control panel either.
-
Can you delete the files you have found on your C drive, Lona? If you delete the folder in Program Files, it may let you re-install it again.
-
You must remove "Symantec" Lona, and anything in relation with it first, I think.
-
I tried deleting the files but still had the ruddy recycle bin. I can't delete symantic, joudi as I also have norton antivirus. :(
-
I can see Joudi's point Lona as there will be a lot of shared files across the entire suite of Symantic programs you have installed. As long as you have the original CD Rom you can unintall the Antivirus program first then try uninstalling the Utilities. Don't forget to run Live Update immediately after you reinstall them though!

I managed to re-install norton utilities after our discussion Simon. Although I deleted all the files I must not have deleted the folder. This time after deleting the files I also deleted the empty folder and it worked. After all my worry Norton Utilities did not solve my IE6 problems so I still have the orginial problem. :(
-
Glad you got that part sorted at least, Lona. I think all you can do now is re-install Internet Explorer, in the hope that it will reset all it's defaults, and fix the problem.

Has Norton's Utilities solved a problem for anybody? It never has for me! ;D

Sometimes it creates more problems than it solves, Clive. ;D

I tried that Simon but it still has the same problems. I read somewhere on microsoft that downloading IE6 while running antivirus software can produce problems with the download. Maybe that could be my problem. When I uninstalled 6 and tried 5 I still had the same problem and it came pre-installed. I am still searching for a solution.

Its removed a lot of dead shortcuts and repaired things on my PC Clive, I wouldnt be without it and I run Win Doctor at least a couple of times a month.
I just ran it now and it found and fixed 25 potentially problem causing faults :doggie:

Sorry if this is old ground, but have you got Service Pack 1 for IE6, Lona?
Re Norton Utilities, I run the One Button Checkup fairly regularly, and it always finds something to fix.
-
Yes I did Simon. I also updated critical patches to both it and outlook express. It can't be them as I had the problem before updating. I thought updating might have fixed things but didn't. To bring you up to date, as long as I copy and paste web addys into the address bar it works. I can also search from MSN and click on links, it's only if I try any other search engine. Weird innit. ???

All I can suggest is... Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org/) ;D ;D
