Title: Most attachments Outlook removing
Post by: Michelle on October 03, 2003, 08:04
Hi Guys

I wonder if you can help with yet another little problem I am having.

I get my emails through outlook express. And just lately its not letting me have hardly any attatchments. (I Use AVG with it)

I get this message

OE has removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail.

I'm sure I haven't changed any settings for this, and this didn't used to happen.  It can be any sort of file not just exe. So I must have changed something without knowing.

How can I change it back ? I can't seem to find anything.

Thanks

Tools > Options > Security, Michelle.  There's a box there to stop any unsafe attachments being opened.  These are mainly .exe files.  If you want to open attachments, untick the box, but make sure you scan everything with your AV software before opening.

Thanks Simon, I'll see how that goes.  Funny thing is it didn't stop the microsoft update attachment virus but it stops everything else

I get the very same message, Michelle and only recently too. Guess what, I only got it after I downloaded Mozilla. ;D. Both you and I have WINME so I guess Mozilla don't like us very much or has Simon put a hex on our PCs ;)

Why don't you both try switching to Mozilla Mail?  It has a safety feature that it will not allow excecutable attachments to open within the e-mail, but it doesn't remove them.  You simply save them to your desktop, or wherever, and you can open them from there, hopefully having virus scanned them first.  It's a better system than OE, in that you are safeguarded from automatic excecutables, which could contain viruses.

You can Import your mail, addresses and settings from OE easily into Mozilla.  Go on, you know you want to!   ;D ;D

I have this feature turned on all the time.  As Simon says, if you untick the box you can then view the attachments.  I would strongly advise turning it back on as soon as you have viewed the attachments, especially if the computer is used by other members of the family  who may not be as virus-savvy as most of the people here.

Another useful feature of Outlook Express 6 is found under the Read tab:  "View All Messages in Plain Text".  This removes web bugs, which are graphics on a web page or in an e-mail message that are designed to monitor who is reading the web page or e-mail message.

I can only think that Win ME must have a problem with Mozilla.  I am on Win98SE.  Although I don't use Mozilla very much, I have it installed and it hasn't messed up any of my settings.

Incidentally, is there a setting within Mozilla to empty the cache on exit?  When I have used Mozilla, I have had to open the cache manually and delete the contents.  I'm sure that there must be an easier way, but I can't find one.

I don't think there is a way to empty the cache on exit, well, if there is, I haven't found it!   I'll have a look through the plugins when I get a minute, and see if there's an add on tool to do the job.

There is a solution to the cache question, which I got off the Mozilla forum, Dave.  You can set the cache to 0 (zero), then it will not be used at all.  Not sure how this would affect surfing, especially to non-broadbanders. I think it would probably be a bit of a nightmare, especially here on Pals, as it would have to download all the images to build the page each time.   :-\

No I am still using it and I do prefer it to IE - and as I said before I haven't had any dodgy things get in my puter since.  But it does seem to be freezing alot lately, but who knows whats causing that.

Is the freezing general, or mostly on here, Michelle?  I've noticed times on here where there is a considerable delay in page loading, which must be a lot worse on 56k.  I think our server likes to take a tea break occasionally!   ;) ;D

I think it happens when I am in here.. what I do is I look through the last 50 and put ones that I want to see the rest of or reply to on a new tab, sometimes its fine other times I get a complete crash/freeze? I lose mouse, keyboard the lot, before I was able to shut moz and it would be okay but now I can't even do that, I have to reboot.
