Title: Upgrading my PC
Post by: Stefi on October 25, 2003, 13:52
Hi all,

I am currently a user of a Windows 95 pc. Pentium (r) with a 32.0 MB Ram. My Modem is a 33600 bps modem.

The perfomance is slow, therefore I would like to upgrade my PC. I heard that I would need to upgrade my hard disk and processor.
However, I am not sure how should I proceed. I would like to keep my monitor, keyboard, CD-ROM etc.

I generally use my PC for working on Miscrosoft Word,Excel, net surfing, chatting and downloading stuffs.

I would appreciate all your help and opinions on this.

Thank you

Regards,
Stefi

Hi Stefi, and  (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.apax34.dsl.pipex.com%2Fsmileys%2Fwelcome.gif&hash=05644ab4fbfa7c9585f756e9a79aab0a53d0e346)

To be brutally honest, I'm not sure there's much you could do in the way of upgrading your existing machine to anything like today's basic standards.  :-\  In my opinion you would be better off looking for something completely new.  It may not be as expensive as you think.  Could you tell us what sort of budget you may have for this?  We may be able to advise better then.

:welcome: Stefi...

Im no techie but i would say that to get up to date you may be as well buying a new system... :)

You can get them without having to buy the monitor, keyboard and mouse...from ebay or the likes of >>*Here*<< (http://www.yorkshirepcs.com/shop/default.php?cPath=21&osCsid=1cc2e7e1c0b577c5a9876e51f0de6ef9). But i do notice on this site you do have to add a modem to that price....But they aint much..

That site is just an example of prices...you may be able to do better after having a look around.

Hmm, just had a look at that site, and can't seem to get any images, in Moz or IE.  Is it OK for you, Cammy?

I have to agree with Simon on this Stefi.  The amount you would have to pay to upgrade your Win 95 machine would be better spent on getting a brand new computer which would be more suitable for running the latest software.  If you don't go down that route then you could be storing up a lot of problems for yourself in the near future.  Other components are going to break down and installing new software will cause you pain and suffering.

You can still use your existing monitor, keyboard etc etc to keep the price down, and it's surprising what you can buy for just a couple of hundred pounds these days.

I think you could possibly upgrade your OS to win98SE or even win2000 and it should even be possible to have a bigger hard drive (up to 20 Gb)
I'm still using an HP Vectra which has an old pentium in it and the max ram i have been able to put in is 192 Mb.
It has had an Evergreen Spectra 400 MHz upgrade on the processer though

  Yes, that page displays OK, apart from a couple of images at the bottom.  I was trying to establish if the site could be a potential supplier, so I looked at one of the categories, and that's the page I got.  Anyway, who cares??   ;D ;D

The 'Family System' is almost identical to the one I have just built my cousin.  Looks quite a good system.
