Title: Recommended ISP's
Post by: Tony on December 03, 2003, 20:39
I  knew it was the right company to go with, I mean look (http://www.ndo.com/ndo/About_NDO/Why_choose_NDO/whyndo.html) who's recommended it  ;D

You know Rodders, the buggers pinched that quote off my website (http://www.sugrue.ndo.co.uk/).....but they did ask  8)

And what's happening with that sensible Domain Name?

I'm all nose ears!   ;D

no...anyway that would be tantamout to bribery ::)but I must admit they did me a "very good deal" when I signed up, which I could not repeat on a public board  :o Though they are going to start a referral programe in December, so can you wait till then, and use my refferal number  ;D ;D

Do you mean the free one I'm intitled too for signing up ? I have not yet applied for it, thinking of a good name [not already taken]

Edit: Ofcourse my free .co.uk webspace hosted with Plusnet, has been pulled coz I left them and went with NDO [hence ny puppy picture was missing on the forum yesterday. Spoilsports  ;D

Tony, I went into your link and put my phone number in and it said my exchange was active. Nobody told me and I registered with BT. I will have to phone BT tomorrow and check if I am BB ready. £27.99 is a bit expensive.  :)

I bought my own kit, for a PCI ADSL modem and with two filters it will cost you £31.78 delivered from Dabs (http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/hardware/modemsandadslhardware/)

So your first years savings will pay for your kit, either way, buy your own or get it all from NDO, I'm sure I could sort something for you  ;)

Edit: Here's a good site where you can compare ISP's on a graph basis, re speed, reliability, and support. Here (http://www.adslguide.org.uk/isps/compare.asp?ndo=ON&nildram=ON&pipex=ON&plusnet=ON&cmp_action=Compare)

I would have to agree about Pipex Customer Service.  They have got better, but still nowhere near perfect.

Must admit PlusNet service was not bad, apart from them only interested dealing with probs on a rota basis via email [fair I suppose] But being a big firm, there could be 50 bods before you in the queue  :(

Speed, well I've said before, the differance between good ISP's is mint imperial. Worst is when it falls over, and worst still is when support is crap.

And as I use it for trading, I want the latter two parts of the service to be spot on.

NOD and Plusnet offer a backup 0845 number, so why don't Pipex, that's another nig if I'm being picky.  ::)

Advice please before I go and sign up
http://www.giomail.co.uk/

It seems my exchange has been active since 1st December and BT didn't inform me inspite of registering with them. I phoned this morning and they had me down for installation 10th December by some sharp salesman who put the order in without my confirmation being given. I have cancelled the order and am looking around before I decide where to go.

All help greatly appreciated. :)

Its a bit hard to say Lona, the "free modem and activation" appears to cost £8 per month, so that would be £96 per annum over the stated 512 standard price.
Activation fees are around £50 - £60 with most ISPs unless they have a free activation offer on.
So that would leave another £30+ to provide your own modem to work out at a similar price with another isp offering BB at £19-95, I havent checked lately but there were a couple offering sub £20 per month prices a few months back.
I havent heard of anyone using GIO for BB.
It appears to only offer only 10mbs of webspace but its a little unclear  ???

Can't comment on their Broadband service, but their Dial Up wasn't much cop.  Cheap and cheerful, but not a very reliable service.  You could probably do better, for not a lot more money, Lona.

Pipex have had a few problems lately, but are generally very reliable, and I still think they are one of the cheapest overall, as they do special deals for new customers.  Tony would obviously recommend NDO, so I would have a look at both of those before you go any further.

well your own post should tell you all you need to know.

But if you want it spelling out, here goes:

Gio are total crap IMHO, you have been warned, pity ISPreview rejigged their site, otherwise you could have read the zillions of complaints posted on the Gio thread. But as most ISPreview members know about Gio, few get suckered these days.

There's just the one (http://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/showthread.php?s=7758f82243e03417def5b9dae1b9d8ca&threadid=13105) besides you for whom "the penny has yet to drop"  ;D

I used to visit the Gio thread every day, it was magic, poor buggers pulling their hair out trying to contact "support" it's an outfit run by colonial's and they are based in Oldham, they also run takeaways     (http://www.villagemarketdirectory.co.uk/new_oldmark/indresta.htm)OK the giocuisine.co*m  link on that page is now dead., GET A GRIP WOMAN.

BT wholesale sell broadband to all ISP?s for ballpark £15 , Gio are charging £19.95 ?Vat  @£2.97 leaves £16.98, so Gio are providing it for less than two quid a month
   ::)

So what do you know about Gio, no support via email if the poster is not telling porkies,  and salesmen who attempt to stuff you.. And do you know why they donot reply to emails....coz they want you to ring the support line at 75p per minute. Mind you you could alway's order an "Indian" at the same time  ;D

Oh I give up, I can put up with ignorance but I draw the line at stupidity
 :P ;)

Edit: I'm trying the "cruel to be kind" approach tonight folks  ;D

Wait till a put my nose back into place, Tony. I only asked for opinions as I am open to all BB providers that are offering a good deal. I will agree to ignorance as regards BB but I am not Stupid even if I do come from outside Lanark.  ;)
I have been taken in before with providers being top rated for the year like NDO.  Firenet was one of them and it's a case of once bitten, twice shy. NDO could be great today and rotten tomorrow like others to name a few, fast24 for a start. I thank you for your advice and all that time you spent with your response. Maybe one day I will give you advice on how to talk to your betters elders.  ;) ;) ;)
Title: Re:Recommended ISP's

You go with whom you like Lona love, but to say about a company "might" turn crap as against a definet "is" crap...just does not hold water as a valid argument  ;)

Fast24 and the like, well folk go for these firms coz they are the cheapest [prob same reason why Gio caught your eye] Then they moan a bucketful, when they realise cheap is invariably nasty. ::)

Look I would rather you don't go with NDO, if you think that is what my post was based around. Go with Pipex or Plusnet, both are offering good deals, and like NDO are professional outfits, only bigger.

One thing I have learnt in life is, you get what you pay for.  :o

Which is exactly why I ignored all the cheapo providers and went with Nildram :P

Title: Re:Recommended ISP's
Post by: Michelle on December 06, 2003, 10:56
ohh its a tricky choice though isn't it. :o

Nildram seems to come top on that Service Provider Comparison chart most of the time.  Do you not think they are any good then Tony?

NDO weren't on alot of months were they, but they seemed to get stronger as the others got worse. Hmmm

Mind you its going to be a long time till I can afford it
 :'(
Title: Re:Recommended ISP's

Adept,

Nidram are another excellent company, and I know you will read nothing in or out by their exclusion from my post :-[ I just gave Plus and Pipex as examples of alternatives.

You and I both, researched the ISP alternatives in great detail, and I merely passed on said research findings on my part to Lona, purely on a helping a friend basis.

But it would appear more important who Lona does not go with, than whom she does. Remember Lona, if your in the poo poo, with your service, you wont get replies to your emails, and it will cost you 75p a minute to call em.

And can you imagine if you want to migrate from Gio, and they dont supply BT with your BCUK number!!!!! then you will have to start again the activation proccess with another ISP. Look read thread on that very subject on the NDO support forum  (http://www.ndousers.com/cgi-bin/cutecast.pl?session=pgYYfdl6koUBuLt1XCjhGwxdIs&forum=1&thread=156) and see how a professional company interacts with it's customers / potential customers. I know  that Goi on the other hand, stop talking to their customers, once they have them signed up.

Take the advice or not, it is your choice entirely, Lona.

Shell, the reason NDO do not feature on the graph some months, are:

Because the rules for inclusion, state that at least 300 respondents must vote for a ISP per month, for it to be included.  And being a smaller company, and mainly directed at business users , it does not always achieve that figure.

If a tree falls in the forest when nobody is there, does it still make a noise ?  ;)

Have a nice weekend folks

 :)

Good choice Lona, I think their normal deal is the most competitive price wise, for a kit, connection and monthly subscription package, and if they are doing an improved deal for Xmas, even better.

I would have just one area of concern, their suppot comes in for alot of bad press. I rate support as very important, but that's just me, I deplore weak points when I'm paying for a service. When you cannot get an answer as to why you cannot get full use of their service [any ISP] what price you got your modem and filters for becomes less significant.  ::)

Least ways I steered you away from those indians cowboys in Oldham ;D

Broadband.....you'll love it...only time you'll lose the connection is when your PC crashes.....oH dear back to ME again  ::) ;)   ::)

I have had Pipexs ADSL for over 18 months now Tony and havent had to contact them once so although I hear that their support is crap I havent had any need for it.
The connection did drop this morning as they said a few days ago, around 3am but It was back on when I got up  :)

Title: Re:Recommended ISP's

Pipex have extensive FAQs in the support pages on their website, which can help with most of the basic problems.  I have had two occasions to contact them, once to ask about a problem with my modem, and once to check how much of my 50Mb of webspace I had used, as there seems no other way of checking.  On both occasions, they came back to me within about 36 hours.  OK, not what you might call immediate, but the replies they gave were correct, accurate and polite on both occasions.

Lona, you know what I'm like - the classic 'bolshy customer'.  I don't tollerate poor service for long, so if I'm not complaining about Pipex, they must be OK!
