Title: Windows XP time running fast
Post by: knight on January 05, 2004, 15:11
Do people have a solution for this weird problem:

once every week I have to re-set the time settings on my computer because it is running 5 minutes or so fast!

In stead of manually changing settings I can also use the "Update Now" button of the automatic time server update in Windows XP. So nothing wrong with the automatic update proces...

Anyone got a clue?

Cheers!

J.

Hiya Knight,

I use this free prog, it can be set to auto check/update your clock as often as you want [mine is set to once per day] I'm on W2K Pro and as XP is just a tarted up version of W2K Pro it will work fine on your setup http://www.rocketsoftware.com/portfolio/rockettime/upgrade.htm (http://www.rocketsoftware.com/portfolio/rockettime/upgrade.htm)

Program looks OK! Solves the problem indeed... though the problem in itself gives me the creeps...

If someone could indicate a possible cause of the problem: thanks!!

Not sure if this isn't stating the bleeding obvious, but if you right click your clock, go to 'Adjust Date/Time', you get the clock setting screen.  One of the tabs should be 'Internet Time' (see below), which allows you to synchonise with a time server, and that should keep the time accurate for you.  It does on mine, anyway.   :)

Yap that is bleeding obvious, so I didn't fall for that one ;-) Of course the automatic update is on. Frequency of update process is however not high enough to prevent a irritating time difference (its running fast) of up to 10 minutes in a few days.

Maybe Mobo is just whacko (its the MS-6570 with the nVidea nForce2 chipset)?

Might be worth simply changing your CMOS battery as it will be that keeping the clock running when the system is powered down.

Anyway you are only getting a 1 second in 2016 seconds error :)
