I had no idea he co-wrote Dock Of The Bay.  I love that song.

Steve Cropper, legendary guitarist with Booker T. & the MG’s, the Blues Brothers and many more, has died at the age of 84. The musician's death was confirmed to Variety by his son, Cameron.

Cropper was born in Dora, Missouri, in October 1941, and moved with his family to Memphis at the age of nine. He made his name with session band The Mar-Keys, before forming Booker T. & the M.G.'s, the house band at the city's Stax Studios, in 1962.

The band would play on hit singles by Wilson Pickett, Bill Withers, Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Johnnie Taylor, Albert King and more, and have a hit of their own with 1962's Green Onions. Soul Limbo, released six years later, ingrained itself in the UK national consciousness as the long-running theme music for the BBC's cricket coverage.

"Eric Clapton was the one who first told us about that," Cropper told Classic Rock. "I couldn’t believe it."

Cropper also co-wrote and produced Otis Redding's classic (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay, for which he was awarded the Best Rhythm and Blues Song Grammy in 1968.

I was surprised when I read her obituary in today's newspaper.  I'd only seen her on Fawlty Towers.

I've just read some plaudits for the series she did with her late husband Timothy West called Great Canal Journeys.  Must admit, that one floated by me, but I do quite like 'quiet TV' at times, such as the fishing programme with Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer, which has a new series starting.

The Fawlty Towers series must be one of the best ever screened.  And it couldn't have happened without Prunella Scales.

Fawlty Towers actress Prunella Scales has died aged 93, her family have confirmed.

Scales was best known for playing hotel manager Sybil Fawlty, the long-suffering and domineering wife of Basil, in the classic British sitcom.

The actress died "peacefully at home in London yesterday", her sons Samuel and Joseph said.

They added that she was watching Fawlty Towers the day before she died. Scales had been diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2013.

"Our darling mother Prunella Scales died peacefully at home in London yesterday. She was 93," her sons told the PA News agency.

"Although dementia forced her retirement from a remarkable acting career of nearly 70 years, she continued to live at home."

Her husband, fellow actor Timothy West, died in November last year.

She is survived by two sons and one stepdaughter, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The statement added: "We would like to thank all those who gave Pru such wonderful care at the end of her life: her last days were comfortable, contented and surrounded by love."

Broadcaster Gyles Brandreth remembered her as "a funny, intelligent, interesting, gifted human being".

Jon Petrie, director of comedy at the BBC, offered: "She was a national treasure whose brilliance as Sybil Fawlty lit up screens and still makes us laugh today."

Scales also went on to receive a Bafta nomination for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett's 1991 televised play, A Question of Attribution.

But she will forever be most closely identified with the domineering and long-suffering comedy creation Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, best defined by one bark of "Basil!".

All systems  go.  In the end it was quite simple but I haven't had much increase  in speed.  Maybe it needs time to settle down.
