The Buzz / Sonny Curtis dies aged 88
« Last post by Simon on September 21, 2025, 10:59 »
Sonny Curtis, a one-time member of Buddy Holly’s backing band the Crickets who later penned and performed the hit theme song to The Mary Tyler Moore Show, has died at the age of 88.

Curtis’ daughter Sarah confirmed her father’s death Saturday on social media. “I’m heartbroken to tell you that my dad Sonny passed away yesterday after a sudden illness. I’m so grateful that I was with him at the end, along with my mom. It was peaceful and he didn’t suffer,” Sarah Curtis wrote.

“He was 88 and he lived a more exceptional life than anyone I’d ever met. He made a mark on this world, and he made a mark on the hearts of all who knew him. It’s a sad day, but what a life. May we look at his life with joy rather than sadness. He would have wanted that.”

The Meadow, Texas-born Curtis first played alongside Holly in the mid-1950s before that singer formed the Crickets in 1957; Curtis joined the Crickets — now its own entity in addition to backing Holly — in 1958, just months before Holly’s death in February 1959. Curtis remained with the Crickets as lead guitarist in the years after Holly’s death, and soon assumed the role of lead singer as well in the band.

The Buzz / Veteran broadcaster John Stapleton dies aged 79
« Last post by Simon on September 21, 2025, 10:54 »
Veteran broadcaster John Stapleton has died at the age of 79 after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, his agent has said.

The presenter, who featured widely on programmes including the BBC's Watchdog and GMTV's News Hour and began his career at the Oldham Chronicle, died in hospital on Sunday morning.

His condition was complicated by pneumonia, his agent said.

Jackie Gill said "his son Nick and daughter-in-law Lisa have been constantly at his side and John died peacefully in hospital".

A range of tributes have been paid to Stapleton, including form Good Morning Britain presenter Charlotte Hawkins, who described him as a "brilliant broadcaster" and a "genuinely lovely man".

Newsreader Mark Austin said his death was "incredibly sad".

"A good man and top presenter who could turn his hand to anything. Best wishes to his family," he said.

Stapleton revealed his diagnosis in television interviews in October 2024.

Appearing on ITV's Good Morning Britain, he said: "There's no point in being miserable. It won't ever change.

"I mean, Parkinson's is here with me now for the rest of my life. Best I can do is try and control it and take the advice of all the experts."

Stapleton presented BBC's Watchdog with his wife Lynn from 1985 to 1993.

An elderly man walks into a confessional. The following conversation ensues:

Man: 'I am 92 years old, have a wonderful wife of 70 years, many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Yesterday, I picked up two hitch-hiking college girls. We went to a motel where I had sex with each of them three times.'

Priest: 'Are you sorry for your sins?'

Man: 'What sins?'

Priest: 'What kind of a Catholic are you?'

Man: 'I'm Jewish.'

Priest: 'Why are you telling me all this?'

Man: 'I'm 92 years old . . I'm telling everybody!'   :)x

The Laughter Zone / book shop

The weather was nice so I went out for a walk when I saw a book shop.

I was wondering what exactly was in the book shop so I went in.

As I was wandering around taking a look, the shopkeeper, a foreign looking guy stopped me and asked if he could help me.

I imagine I didn't look like his normal clientèle, so I asked,

"Do you have a copy of the Nigel Farage book on immigration Policy?

The clerk said, "F*ck off, get out and stay out!"

I said, "Yes, that's the one, do you have it in paperback?   o:)
