Some programs not able to connect to internet
« on: May 26, 2004, 09:23 »
Upon your sound advice, I installed Mailwasher on my 2 PCs and it has only ever worked on 1. It thinks it's not connected to the internet.

Now I have just installed another program which requires it to connect too - and it also can't connect.

I'm assuming it's the same thing preventing both progs connecting.

Both PCs are wired to the same router/ADSL modem
No software firewall is running
Both PCs can browse websites/download etc OK

Any ideas why one PC is OK and the other isn't?

One thing - I disabled a bunch of 'unecessary' services a while back using services.msc as advised by blackviper.com ???

Is it the same pc that wont connect with either program Ian ?
If it is check that XPs firewall isnt switched on, on the pc that wont connect.
What is the other program that wont connect ?
It may be that ports are open on the router for one pc and closed for the other, that would stop it from working on the one where the ports were closed.
Some routers allow the ports to be open across all the pcs on the LAN whereas some, like mine have to open them for the specific pc on the LAN :doggie:

Hi Sandra - thanks for helping out again!

Yes it's the same computer in each case. I've switched off the firewall - still won't work.

In the error log in MW it says:

[    Error    ] Exception during connect: Socket Error # 10061
Connection refused. (EIdSocketError)

If that means anything to you.

The other program is a local component of an online database used for logging on and saving different views, filters and suchlike.

How do I go about opening ports?

According to this article its definately looking like blocked ports 110 and 25 (used for sending and receiving mail on pop3 accounts), on you router for the pc that it wont work on Ian.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q191687

Can you tell me which router you have then I can possibly check how that one works, in case its different to mine ?

On mine, I access the router by putting its LAN IP address in my browser and logging on as admin, then go to the Configuration part, then Virtual Server settings and add the port numbers and the LAN IP address of the pc that I want to open the port on.
Dont forget to save the settings and reboot the router to apply the changes  :)

Before I start digging around....

That PC already uses Outlook and Outlook Express without any problem - both with POP3

Ok possibly not those specific ports then Ian  ???
I would have a look at the settings in your router and see if some ports are open on one pc and not on the other, it should be easy enough to find which ports are open on both IPs on your LAN and have them configured the same way  :)

I have just come across this :

I get: A Telnet Communications Error Occurred. Error: 10061 Connection is forcefully rejected

A. The selected Telnet cluster declines your request to log in for some reason. Reasons could be that the maximum number of users are already connected.

I wonder if Mailwasher and your other program are only registered for single use on a single pc  ???
Can you try having the programs not running on the pc they work ok on and see if they then connect ok  ???

Jumping in blindly, as usual, there's an option in MailWasher to use a proxy server, where you can set the IP and the access port.  Is that any good?

I tried just having the one MW running, but that wasn;t it.

I then looked in my router control panel, but don't really know what I'm doing. It's a Belkin router/adsl modem.

Simon - even if I use a proxy, the other program won't work using that method.

The only adsl/modem/router I can see on the Belkin site is a wireless one Ian.
I looked in the manual for it and it looks similar in operation to others I have seen for setting up virtual server settings.
It does say that if you have to configure it for a specific aplication then you should contact the applications vendor to see which port you need to allow access for :doggie:

Mail Washer would use port 110, the same as any other mail client, I think.
