Help!
« on: January 03, 2005, 19:00 »
I've just got a new printer today and installed it which was fine but since then I've had difficulty remaining on the net. Every 30 mins I keep getting cut off. A friend has suggested that it could have been altered in the power mangement but we can't seen to find this on XP. Does anyone know where this is or any other possible solutions?

Hi Whiskas,

Power Management in XP is in Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Power Options.  Sorry, don't know what else the problem could be.

Yes I have SP2 and the printer is a Lexmark x1180. I had a look in the device manger too but there is nothing in the properties either. I can't see anything that shows it switching off after 30 mins

Does the problem occur if the printer is switched off Whiskas or just anytime?

Well it's only been since the printer was installed. I've switched it off and it's still happening

If you're sure that it's not your ISP cutting off problem, have you tried to uninstall it and see if your internet connection is OK?

If it's ok, try to restart your computer and reinstall it.

Not a USB printer and a USB broadband modem perchance? Could simply be too much power drain on USB if so.

Is it a hard and fast 30 Minute shutdown?

Does it occur when the printer is unplugged from the computer?
hey promised the earth! Then delivered mud.
Technically it did meet the spec.

I have both usb printer and a usb external dial up modem. I disconnected the printer and uninstalled it but the problem is still there. I just get logged off aol every 30 mins. I have to replug the modem each time to get it to work. Aol got me uninstall and reinstall their software but that's not resolved it either. I'm at a loss ??? I also uninstall the printer

Have you tried to plug the printer in another USB?

Was there any additional software which may have been installed with the printer?  Check your Add / Remove Programs list for anything new.

As you have XP, is a System Restore to before you installed the printer an option?

AOL are apparently quite notorious for logging you off after 30 minutes of inactivity e.g. http://www.crab.rutgers.edu/~revans/BasicBotany/FAQ.htm and http://www.smc.edu/ecompanion/support/generalFaq.htm

You haven't changed browsers recently have you?
