Hi roaddogg,

I presume this is happening when you are doing something, or does it also happen when it is idle?

I'll have to get back to you tomorrow, unless some of the others can help.

Looks like a couple more people are having the same problem according to this forum :

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1013458197

Only suggestion seems to be this :

This is used for error reporting look at the event viewer and see what it says at the Run prompt type eventvwr.msc

If you look at that it may tell you which program is causing the problem.
If it does it may just be as simple as uninstalling it and reinstalling it.
Unfortunately I dont run XP so cant offer anything else at the moment  :-*

I found another forum with a lot more people with the same problem here :

http://www.hardware-one.com/forum/read_msg.php?tid=6043&forumid=qa&offset=0

They seem to be sugesting everything from faulty motherboards, hard drives and IDE controllers, hardware issues and software.
The only thing that I can think of that makes any kind of sense is updating the 4 in 1 drivers for the VIA chipsets (if your PC has them as they seem to be notorious for causing problems)or probably the best option is this patch downloaded from here :

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=3D41A046-0E2C-429F-8F40-F30014ADC3BB

Part of the information on that download states :

CAUSE This problem occurs because after a Minidump (or memory dump) file is written, the paging file continues to have a flag set that indicates that a memory dump file needs to be written. RESOLUTION To resolve this problem, download this file.

Although that was posted at the end of December, no one has posted since to say whether it cured the problem or not.

Some more information on it here too :

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;317277

Good luck  :-*

Sorry about that,I just modified it to make it work right I think you'll find it does now.
If not,try the one I just added at the bottom of my last post as it has another download on there but its probably the same one ,although it has another way of "walking around" the problem by going from start and following instructions  8)

It also might be worth remembering that you still have Win98 lurking about on your machine, don't you?  Do you actually need 98 as well?  Would it perhaps be worth getting rid of it once and for all, and doing a clean install of XP?

I'm no expert, so please don't do anything until one of the others comments!

Hi roaddogg :)

You need to look closely when the "Blue screen of death" (BSOD) happens.

Near the top, it should mention the module which is causing the fault. If you let us know what this is, we may be able to come up with some suggestions for removing the problem for you.

I'm fairly sure this info will also be found in the Minidump file you mentioned. Could you have a look and let us know what it says? (open it with notepad).

When it starts to run scandisk can you not press the enter key to abort it and boot straight to windows as I can on 98se and on ME?
As I said I havent got XP so I cant check it for you.
Glad we got the other problem sorted  :-*

As I cant stand to see a grown man cry Roaddog I found this for you   :-*

The Chkntfs.exe utility has been developed by Microsoft and is available in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 2 and later versions of Windows. It is designed to disable the automatic running of chkdsk on specific volumes, when Windows restarts from an improper shutdown. Chkntfs can also be used to unschedule a chkdsk if chkdsk /f was used to schedule a chkdsk on an active volume on the next system restart.

Full article and instructions from here :

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=160963

Hope you can make some sense of it,personally I would just hit the enter button each time it did it  ::)

Hi Roaddogg

This should sort the problem:

boot into safe mode and find the following file : C:WINDOWSsystem32autochk.exe Rename it autochk.exe.bak, now right click and create a new txt file, rename this file autochk.exe Now it will stop running itself.

If it doesn't work, you can rename the autochk.exe.bak file back to autochk.exe and no damage has been done
