Slower tonight

I hate to say it but could the putting on of all our signatures be causing the pages to load slower?

It's been a lot slower than before.  :chuckpc:

We may well be moving to another (!) new server soon, so hopefully things will improve.

I was on for a few minutes this afternoon during my tea break and the site was just sitting there "Sending Request" (Opera status bar) exactly as it used to be before the rebuild.  I have noticed over the past few days that the almost instantaneous loading of pages has disappeared.  I'm no expert on these matters, hence I can't speak with any authority, so I'll take sam's answer for the moment.  However, should it continue, it might really be time to decide whether we want a fancy site with nice signatures and so on, or a fast, usable site.

Well, we certainly don't want to bury the forum inside lots of gimmicky bells and whistles, as can (nearly) be seen elsewhere, but the fact that a lot of the time, we fly along, might indicate that the sigs don't really make all that much  difference, and I have to admit, they do make it feel more homely.

I agree in that the sigs dont actually affect the speed much.

Our present hosts have been disappointing and we cannot claim to be a 24/7 forum these days.  We do seem to be getting more than our fair share of 404 error messages don't we?  Hopefully we will change to the new hosts by the weekend and this process is already underway.

It's such a pity, because it seemed so much better for the first few days, then it just seemed to go t*ts up.

Of course it means that there will have to be yet more downtime.   :argh:
But we are also upgrading the software at the same time to address some security issues.  Never rains but it pours.

The forum seems to be slowing down again :(.  It was particularly slow when I tried to visit at 10 am this morning.

Can't say I noticed myself, Gill, but there are times when things do slow down temporarily.  It's possibly due to the server rebooting, and usually speeds up again after a short while.

Much faster now.
