YouTube to show full shows from Five
« on: December 03, 2009, 22:40 »
Popular video-sharing website YouTube has signed a deal with Five that will let visitors watch full-length shows from the channel.

You will now be able to see Home and Away, The Hotel Inspector and The Gadget Show on YouTube for free, with another 250 hours of archive content available to watch too.

The move comes after YouTube announced deals with Channel 4 and several other content providers to show full-length programmes on the site.

Nikesh Arora of Google said: "The past few weeks have been exciting for all of us who love British TV, and we're delighted that our users can now find even more of their favourite programmes in YouTube's new Shows section.

Dawn Airey, chairman and chief executive of Five, said: "This is a tremendously important deal for Five because in one fell swoop it extends the reach of our content beyond linear TV and our own existing websites to a new audience of younger, upwardly mobile and web-savvy individuals - an audience that advertisers are equally desirous of attracting."

Though the content will be free, there will be advertising shown on the videos.

I'm surprised YouTube is prepared to sully its reputation by entering a relationship with Channel Five.  Perhaps they are hoping to persuade 'proper' broadcasters to follow suit.
There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is readily adopted.

But if they are already broadcasting, they've used the bandwidth they pay for...

Certainly that, but given the repeat levels, it's got no other benefit.

Unless it's something you've missed, and there's no other way, I cannot, for the life of me, see the point of watching TV on a computer, by choice.  :dunno:
