Solar flares 'turn on' Northern Lights

A question posed to Aberdeen tourist information staff could get easier to answer as an "awakening" Sun raises chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

In the late 1980s I actually witnessed a very active Aurora Borealis in the skies over Bournemouth.  Jaw-dropping stuff, but difficult to convince anyone who wasn't there that night!

It was a spectacular display Rod.  Definitely not your imagination.  It happened in the November of 1989 if my memory serves correct but I can check up on that date.

That sounds about right, Clive.  I'm glad I wasn't the only one who imagined it.   ;)
