They will be considerably lower in the sky by now Simon.  When I saw them earlier tonight they were in a very similar position to the picture Sky & Telescope suggests for April 8.  Try again tomorrow but best to look straight after sunset and keep going out until you see Venus.  Mercury will take longer to become visible because it's considerably fainter but it's still much brighter than any star in the area.
