What Can You Make From A 2x4 Board?
« on: December 15, 2010, 22:51 »
One of the woodwork forums I frequent started a competition a few months ago to see what each member could make from a standard length of 2x4 construction grade pine board.  The deadline for competition entries is Christmas Day and, although I may struggle to make the deadline, here's how my entry is progressing.

Just to prove I once had a piece of 2x4:

It got cut into these components:

Then it was reassembled into a coffee table:

I'm going to decorate the upper rails with Tudor roses and other motifs to turn it into a Genuine Antique Tudor Coffee Table :)x :

Those motifs are still far from complete and they may not all be finished by the deadline.  Anyway, I thought I'd let everyone know what I've been up to in my workshop on those rare days when the temperature has risen above freezing.  If I seem to visit the forum less than normal over the next couple of weeks, you'll know why - I've moved out of the cold workshop and into the warm kitchen :) .

Words fail me, Gill. All that from a piece of 2x4... Can you build me a shed next, please? ;)

I completed it before the deadline :) .

Now I've got a new coffee table and the wood cost me less than a tenner.  That's a win in my book, no matter what the outcome of the competition :) .

Dead brill, Gill!  I hope you'll encourage the use of drinks coasters with it.  Is each leg comprised of a single piece?

My dad was a cabinet maker and would have really enjoyed this.  He made me a coffee table with a top made from 3/4" multicoloured strips of Parana Pine he'd collected.  A stylish but otherwise unassuming piece, it contained many different shades of greens, pinks, greys, etc., and was often remarked upon by visitors.

Is each leg comprised of a single piece?

It certainly is :) .  I compound cut it on a scroll saw, and here's a 'work in progress' photo:

When all the cuts are complete, the outer waste wood falls away to reveal the inner shape.  It's exactly the same technique that I used to make a tree-full of Christmas decorations:

Believe it or not, I've had other woodworkers asking me if I want to sell them my coffee table!
