Pirate Bay sails closer to UK block
« on: February 21, 2012, 22:01 »
ISPs are likely to be asked to block controversial website The Pirate Bay, leading to increased concerns over censorship of the web in the UK.

In a written ruling in a case brought by entertainment industry heavyweights against the UK's six largest ISPs, a judge found that The Pirate Bay breached UK copyright rules.

“I conclude that both users and the operators infringe the copyrights of the Claimants (and those they represent) in the UK,” he said.

Although the ruling does not oblige ISP to block the site at this stage – and they have been reluctant to do so without a court order – it paved the way for a blocking order case to be brought, as seen with the case of Newzbin.

"Despite their ability to do so and despite the judicial findings that have been made against them, the operators take no steps to prevent infringement," the judge said.

"On the contrary, they actively encourage it and treat any attempts to prevent it (judicial or otherwise) with contempt."
