When I downloaded the latest updates for Windows 8.1 a icon appeared on my screen letting me know that the update for Windows 10 can be downloaded and installed on July 2015.

Register for the update now and it's free for W7 and 8.1 users for 1 year.  ;D

But for those of us who don't want to upgrade, say from Windows 7, we are now stuck with unsolicited adware from Microsoft.

This is just like sitting in the back row in a remedial class.

It's called progress and it is the wrong approach to turn your back on the future as you will have to upgrade at some point as they will not support windows 7 for ever so you might as well change and learn while it is free.  :D

It'a not a question of not wanting to upgrade, 'just because', Den, as I'm perfectly happy to upgrade my 8.1 laptop, but my Windows 7 machine is already at least 7 years old, and has a few programs on it that I don't think will run on later versions, as they only just manage to run on Windows 7!  These are programs I am used to, and have features and functions that later versions don't have, so I am keen to keep them up and running for as long as possible. 

Besides, I should be able to decide for myself whether I want to upgrade my own machine or not, and if I choose not to, I shouldn't be left with Microsoft nagware cluttering up my system tray.  There should be an option to say 'No thanks', and the icon goes away.  When I choose to upgrade, it will be to a new machine which will have Windows 10 (WX?) on it anyway.

That is my position too.  MS cannot be trusted to deliver the goods so I'll wait until I need a new machine with Win 10 already installed on it.

Microsoft Windows:

Versions 1 & 2 experimental so forget about them.

3.1 and 3.11 for Workgroups - great operating systems.

95 - a disaster

98 - (second edition) - great operating system.

ME - a disaster

XP - great operating system

Vista - a disaster

7 - great operating system

8 - Only for the "Let's keep up with the Jones's" but generally considered a retrograde step and a poor version of Android.

10- Who knows - I'll let you be the Guinea Pigs!

I tried windows 10 on another laptop  I have it doesn't seem that bad so far
