Uploading straight from FrontPage
« on: July 02, 2003, 16:04 »
Hi all,

I have recieved an email telling me that my 'Frontpage' service has been activated, now what?

I'm bright enough to build a web site using Frontpage and upload by Cute FTP, but stuck with enabling Frontpage uploading direct

I'm mean what do I have to do configeration wise to enable me to connect upload a page direct from my Frontpage program. I take it when I have configered it right, every time I press save on Frontpage, that web page is updated on my website?

Explain to me as if I'm an idiot, I know I know....what do I mean IF....... then it is most unlikley that I will have to pester you again  Step by step instructions remember. :)

I know I could raise a 'ticket' on tech support with my ISP. But I thought I would just see who comes up with an answer that I understand, so I have posted this message on my ISP forum as well. It's a test, so come on  ;)

To save you actually looking at the help files Tony,I found this :

http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/webspace/upload3.html

Its for Tiscali but I assume it will work the same with your ISP as long as you put your own host information in,interestingly though Tiscali recommend not doing it direct but using a seperate FTP program to do it with  :-*

Now that we have sorted uploading via Frontpage, I have another query. I have just had a .co.uk domain registered and hosted by my ISP for free. Now to configure it the page reads thus:

Mail settings
SMTP mail service only available on accounts with static IP address component

POP3   I wish to collect my mail using POP3

Other   I wish to specify DNS records for mail to this domain

Domain hosting settings

Default   I wish to have this domain hosted automatically under my webspace
Directory   /htdocs/ looks like I should put somthing in here

Other   I wish to specify DNS records for hosts under this domain

Additional DNS records (Advanced)
There are no additional records for this domain
Renewing your domain
Your domain, www.tonysugrue.co.uk is set to expire on 2005-06-25
Your hosting for domain, www.tonysugrue.co.uk is set to expire on 2004-06-25

Now the folder I use in Frontpage which has all my webpages in it is called D:/ Mydocs/My Webs and in it are a ?private? and ?image? folders plus two more folders ?myweb? and ?myweb2? both also with  private and images sub folders in each , all three private and image folders are empty . And all my webpages are listed below these folders in the Open File window.

Question how do I configure this lot so as to be able to use my new .co.uk domain as well as my existing web address.

Thanks in advance
 :)

I think we will have to wait for someone else to sort that out Tony, sorry  :(

If I get an hour spare sometime before someone has solved your problem,I may come up with how to do it but I havent got my own domain name,so its unknown territory for me again  :-*

This should work Tony :

Take all your webpages and transfer them up via ftp to the directory /htdocs/ on your hosting server.
The important thing is that if you have stuff with links on it then its the linking structure that must be mantained when uploaded.
ie: the relative path

For example
If under your frontpage storage you store your images for the pages in the IMAGES folder on your pc,then you must make a new IMAGES folder in the /htdocs directory on the webhost so that the page when uploaded will find them  :-*

Thanks once again Sandra, I have got as far as viewing [on the web]the content uploaded via Frontpage, of the folder configured for my new .co.uk domian, but not via my www.tonysugrue.co.uk address.

Explained in detail to tech support at PlusNet and their fourum [awaiting an answer]:

I can connect to fp server via 'Frontpage' my problem is I'm trying to make my new .co.uk web site viewable, as well as my PlusNet domain, and I'm struggleing. I have configured the .co.uk domian using /htdocs/myweb7, and I can upload content to said folder, but I can only view it via web address http://fp.suggy.plus.com

When I type my www.tonysugrue.co.uk  domian into the IE address bar I get this message

HTTP 404 - File not found
Internet Explorer

How do I view said web content via my.co.uk address ? Do I need to download some additional file from the Microsoft site, if so which file would that be ? I'm using Frontpage version 10.0.4128.

http://www.suggy.plus.com/

Any Frontpage multi domian users out there ?

I'm thinking more and more that I'm missing some file that needs downloading to enable Frontpage to point to different folders on the ISP hosting server.

Because since I configured my .co.uk domain to /htdocs/myweb7 I cannot upload anything to altered pages to my suggy.plus.com domain. I have to do that via my free Cute FTP software. I'm happy using the Cute software, pity I have not got their purchased version 'cough' as I think it would solve the problem of uploading to two different folders. The free version just wont let you create a sub-folder to /htdocs

Right, I recieved this from Plusnet Tech support http://www.moonphase.plus.com/domain.htm looks like this will sort out my problem of not being able to view website via my .co.uk domain.

Will let you now how I go on, when I get around to it, attention elsewhere at the mo.  ::)

Well after upgrading "cough" from a restricted CuteFTP V 4.0 evaluation copy to CuteFTP 5.0 XP which allows you to create sub-directories in the host server /htdocs directory BINGO

Thank you to my friends out their for your unstinting help  ;)

Shall now be able have a nice 'here to help website' and another one set up to 'defeat the evil empire' :P ;)
