Double files - Can you help?
« on: August 15, 2003, 15:10 »
Does anyone one know if there is a freeware thing around that can detect files that are the same on your hard drive so that you can delete them.

Deleting "DUPLICATE" files usually results in a format and a complete reinstall, unless you are either very very good at identifying duplicates or are very very very lucky.  Don't delete a duplicate file unless the other file is exactly the same Size, Date, and Name as the other.

If you do delete any files, Michelle, make sure you either keep them in the recycle bin for a couple of weeks, or even better, leave them where they are and slightly rename them.  For example, if you wanted to delete a duplicate of the file "crap.dll" rename it something like "crap.dll.delete"  Then, if a program starts looking for crap.dll you can do a search, change its name back to its original and "bobs your uncle".  If, after several months, everything is working, you can search for the files named *.delete and get rid of them.

Personally, unless you are absolutely desperate for HD space, I would leave well alone.

I would tend to agree with Dave there.  Unless they are in My Documents, and you know exactly what they are, leave well alone, Michelle, especially anything in the Windows folder.  If you want to clear a bit of space, have you got a CD re-writer?  Try moving some of My Documents (music files, pics, downloaded programs, etc) to a CD.  You could also clear your cache and cookies.  It surprising how much space they can take up if you haven't cleared them out for a while.

If you don't know how to clear your cache and cookies, open Internet Explorer, then click Tools > Internet Options, and on the General tab, there should be two buttons to clear them.   :)

Actually Joudi,Michelle is correct grammatically (I think).
Written this way it is a statement with an exclamation mark :
(technical aren't I !)
English can be a sloppy language but that is quite correct although a fuller sentence could be written as :
I am being technical aren't I !

It is often the case that someone speaks a more perfect version of a language when it is not their own than when it is their native one,as you learn the "correct" way which is not necessarily the usual way that it is spoken :doggie:

Its funny Lona that the scots use the word KEN for know as thats nearer to its germanic root than english.
The german verb for "to know" is KENNEN  ;)

    Then I are very confused.

Ah, How strange those english are!!!

When I say "nettety" it's wrong. When they say "are..I" it is correct.    :brick:

Ah,now I see what it is that is confusing you maybe Joudi.
It was the "AREN'T I" instead of "are not I" whereas it would have been "AM NOT I" if it hadnt been abbreviated, which would not have been grammatically correct as it is a plural form of the verb "I AM" rather than a singular one  :)
